"Soul"

“Food for Thought”

SOUL

A person is alive as long as “Soul, Aatma or Spirit” remains within body.

What is soul from when it comes into the body, where does it go after leaving the body? Who takes the soul out of body? When it is taken out of body?

Science cannot answer these questions because “soul” is not something physical. Therefore, it falls outside the domain of science, alternatively we can find answers to these questions in religion only; all the religion revealed or non-revealed have their own concept of soul, salvation or damnation.

Of all the religions Islamic Scripture i.e. Qur’an provides most definite answers to these questions.

“And they ask you about the soul. Say the soul is something from the command of my Lord, and you are not given from the knowledge, but a little (meaning that soul having no corporeal manifestation is beyond the comprehension of man).”                                 (Surah Bani Israel, 17/85)

"Life/Death"

“Food for Thought”

LIFE / DEATH

Life is defined as “state of being alive”. “Alive” in turn is defined as “alive in life, in vigor”.                                    (Chambers Dictionary)

Death is the permanent cessation of all bodily functions.

A person is medically pronounced dead when his heartbeat and breathing movement has ceased. This happens when the supply of oxygen to the parts of brain controlling breathing, heart rate, and other vital reflexes have ceased to function has stopped for five minutes.                                       (MacMillan Encyclopedia, 2002 Edition.)

So you see science is unable to define either life or death in definite terms, it is even unable to determine, in the case of “death” what happens first. Is it the heartbeat which stops first, cutting off supply of oxygen to brain cells controlling vital reflexes, or conversely, is it the brain cells which are destroyed first, stopping the heart beat?

As far as human body is concerned science is able to identify and definite terms all the stages development of human body from conception to childbirth.

Where science fails, religion most definitely declares that a person is “alive” as long as “soul” remains in the body. As soon as the soul leaves the body the living person becomes “a dead body, a corpse mortal remains”.

The dead body is either buried, burnt or exhumed and the prayers are offered for the deliverance of departed “soul”. Attention to soul is invited on a separate page.

________

A man hale and hearty full of life and vigor drops down and is pronounced ‘dead’.
________

A physician with all the skill at his command and gadgetry at his disposal helplessly watches his patient slip away.

What is the common factor in these two deaths?
